Electric light orchestra hit 19778/5/2023 Total chart involvement of the band and its members: Number of hits In addition to all the ELO hits which he wrote and produced, Jeff Lynne also produced the following hit for George Harrison: Date of entry In the US they would see 25 hits (so far) with ‘Don’t Bring Me Down’ peaking at 4, their best effort. ELO would see 33 UK chart hits (so far) with their collaboration with Olivia Newton-John on the theme song to the film ‘Xanadu’ being their only chart topper (excluding that, their best peak was 3 with ‘Don’t Bring Me Down’). She got no reply to her call and the album ended up being called ‘No Answer’ when released in the States as that is what she wrote down. However, when it was released in the US, a secretary at the record label called the UK to find out the album title. ELO’s debut album was simply called ‘Electric Light Orchestra’. ‘10538 Overture’ was eventually released in 1972 and would get to number 9 in the UK just as the last single by The Move called ‘California Man’ was seeing its last few weeks in the charts. The 2 bands then existed simultaneously, the idea being that the more established The Move would finance the fledgling Electric Light Orchestra. Lynne liked the idea and in the July of 1970, when Wood added some cellos to a song Jeff Lynne had written, they had their first ELO song in the form of ‘10538 Overture’. It was Roy Wood who had the idea to add orchestration to the sound to ‘pick up where the Beatles left off’ as he put it. Over a period of 5 years, they scored 9 UK top 20 hits, including the number 1 hit, ‘Blackberry Way’. Its founding members included Roy Wood and Bev Bevan. The Electric Light Orchestra had its roots in a band called The Move which was formed in 1965.
